Each char has the ability to carry 4 weapons. Rangers should carry a longbow, flatbow, recurve bow, and shortbow.
Each type of bow has a specific use in the game.
A flatbow is used to shoot at enemies who are high up. The bow shoots arrows in a high arc. Arrows from this bow are easily evaded by moving targets.
A longbow has the same range as as a flatbow but a lower arc, thus making it harder for enemies to evade. This bow is good for luring enemies. I find it useful for now ranger char to carry a pre-searing bow with no attribute requirement. These are available with up to 12 damage.
A recurve bow has an even lower arc, with a range between the longbow and shortbow. Most Rangers use a recurve for interrupting, because they don't have to get as close to the target as with a shortbow. But the shortbow having the shortest range obviously makes it better for interrupts.
A shortbow has the shortest range of all the bows, but the highest rate of fire. This comes in handy when spreading Conditions or for raising the DPS to a respectable level.
Hornbows have inherent armor penetration, making them a hard-hitting choice for spikes. But due to their slow draw time they make poor choices for a favored bow.
Two mods can be applied to a bow at one time. The prefix and suffix denote the mods. There are no 'best' mods for the game, but rather 'better' mods for each mission/quest or farming scenario.
Using A Bow
When using a bow, try to take the high ground. As a ranged weapon, your distance to target range increases the higher you are. In certain farming situations, this can give you a time saving advantage.
I use this to great effect with my W/Ra, apply poison, and Elswyth's Lowbow (dropped by the Darkness in the Tombs with +33% Poison duration), when farming for the Totem Axe in The Falls area. The Root Behemoths are Ranger type enemy, but are static, similar to the Siege Wurm. If you can take the high ground, then you can shoot poisoned arrows at them without getting anything thrown back. With the build I have, I do little physical dmg, but the poison degen works to kill the Root. The advantage in this case is that I don't have to spend time killing the Life Pods that protect the Root. There can be up to 3 Pods, and if you aggro them all at the same time, it can take a long time to drain their energy and kill them. There is another way to do this, whisper me and i'll tell you)
